Acts 1:8 Really

Most version of the Bible translate Acts 1:8 as (Jesus speaking) "You shall receive power after the Holy Spirit has come upon you and you shall be my witnesses..."

In a recent trip oversees, I began to see that this verse (like so many) has been translated to make Christians comfortable. I don't see how a work like "martyr" can be translated into a weak, passive word like "witness". Granted to give witness to the wonderful love of God in Jesus is important, but it is not what Jesus said. He said you would have power (dynamite root word--explosive power?) and we like that, cause we are power crazy. But this Power from the Holy Spirit (not our own power) will cause us to be martyred....what??? killed for Jesus??? Really????

YES.

Standing alongside men and women, in a country that hates Jesus, that kills his followers for no other reason than they are followers of Jesus, gives new meaning to the verses translated (or perhaps mistranslated) for our comfort. In his book, "Dangerous" Caleb Bislow says there are places that are deadly for followers of Jesus. I bet where you live is dark, perhaps dangerous, but certainly not deadly.

Im inclined to say, if you are not in a deadly place, understand most of your theology is passive, convenient, safe and its is killing you, it does it so slowly you don't even know it. If you are not able to go to a place that is deadly, talk to those who have gone there. I won't tell you here all that I have learned in my travels. You won't believe me anyway...why? cause you are following Jesus from the comfort of your safe, passive, church attending coffin.

I hope it might propel you to read Bislow's book and even more, get out the pew and go to some place dangerous or even deadly. If you want to know more, email me directly. Id love to have you come with me next time. You won't be the same after walking in a deadly place with people ready to die for Jesus.

next week I'll share my next big lesson on the last trip...if I am still living on this planet.

this week: be open the power (dynamite) of the Holy Spirit. and prepare to die for Jesus (Philippians 1:21)
