Individualism or Irrelevancy?

"America is a less Christian nation than it was 20 years ago, and Christianity is not losing out to other religions, but primarily to a rejection of religion altogether, a survey published Monday found. William Donohue, president of the Catholic League, said he thinks a radical shift towards individualism over the last quarter-century has a lot to do it." From CNN (RSS feed)

I would argue it is both individualism and irrelevancy. Christianity, in its ritualized, top down, powerless, pagan and perverted expression is more irrelevant than anything else. We've known this for a long time. This isn't anything new. IN places where clergy continue to claim dominance the church continues to decline. Why? Clergy as a separate class of people with fairy dust is a pagan hold over and has not been effective for 50 years. Yet in "top down" 18th century European models of hierarchical denominational structures it is all I see and it is KILLING the church.

Ephesians 4:11-12 is so is the sole job of pastors (and teachers, apostles, prophets and evangelists and bishops and elders and deacons, and leaders) to EQUIP the people of God (saints) for THEIR ministry. That appeals to both the individualism rampant in our society today AND to making following Jesus Christ anything but irrelevant.

Following Jesus is the most profound expression of life I know. Anything else is boring, dull, pathetic and usually hopeless.

So how might we reverse this trend of rejection of Jesus?
Clergy--empower others or sit down. All that "stuff" you do (preaching, leading meetings, arbitrating church fights, pacifying disgruntled congregants) is a WASTE OF YOUR TIME.
Followers of Jesus--get up, get moving, allow the joy in you to be contagious and don't allow denominational big wigs to stop you. You pay their salary. If they aren't helping you follow Jesus, fire them.
Denominational big wigs--equip those under you to give this away as fast as you can. Stop pimping the pastors to find new johns. That system hasn't worked in a long time.
