Measuring Standards for a New Year

SEASONS OF LOVE (RENT—Jonathon Larson—2/4/60-1/25/96)

Five Hundred twenty-five thousand, six hundred minutes
Five Hundred twenty-five thousand --Moments so dear
Five Hundred twenty-five thousand, six hundred minutes
How do you measure, measure a year?

In daylights---In sunsets
In midnights---In cups of coffee
In inches---In miles
In laughter ---In strife.

Five Hundred twenty-five thousand, six hundred minutes
Five Hundred twenty-five thousand
Five Hundred twenty-five thousand, six hundred minutes
Journeys to plan
Five Hundred twenty-five thousand, six hundred minutes
How do you measure,
the life of a woman or a man?

In truths that she learned,
Or in times that he cried,
In bridges he burned,
Or the way that she died.

How about love?
How about love?
How about love?

Its time now --¬To sing out
Tho’ the story never ends
Let’s celebrate
Remember a year in the life of friends

The musical RENT is probably too far out in reality for most congregation—but that doesn’t make it less real, less powerful or less of anything. If you haven’t seen it-- go. But also realize you won’t leave theater the same.

The characters are people I know. You may think that strange, but that is how people are today. Here the theater mimics life, not the other way around.

But these people, like you, are my friends. These are the people that help me measure life, my life, your life. These are the people whom we love and when fortunate, they love us back. I am very fortunate. They are those who walk the valleys and hills we walk, the sidewalks and coffee shops, the schools and the homes.

So as you think back on 2005, think ahead to 2006.
It is not the strife, it is not the pain. It is not the mean and cruel things we have done or which have been inflicted upon us…these are but distractions from the purpose of our lives.

So…how will you measure your life?
What rule will you use?
What do you want to say or have said about you, this time next year?

How about Love?
How about it?
Love?

Five Hundred twenty-five thousand --Moments so dear
Five Hundred twenty-five thousand, six hundred minutes
How do you measure, measure a year?
